What is Rotary?

Rotary is a global civil society organization formed by business and professional individuals dedicated to promoting goodwill and peace worldwide and serving the community.

By emphasizing professional ethics, community service, and international fellowship, Rotary develops local and global projects in areas such as health, education, and the environment.

One of Rotary's greatest achievements is its global effort to eradicate polio. By becoming a part of Rotary, you too can contribute to the community and make a difference around the world.

Purpose of Rotary

The purpose of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise in daily life, particularly by inspiring and supporting individuals in the following four areas.

History of Rotary

Founded on February 23, 1905, Rotary is the world’s first volunteer service organization:

"Rotary is a global organization of business and professional individuals who come together to promote peace and goodwill, uphold high ethical standards in all professions, and serve humanity."

The ideal of Rotary service is expressed as “Service Above Self.” Rotary unites people across the globe, wherever they may live, around this shared commitment to service and purpose.

Each Rotary club is composed of business and professional individuals who accept the ideal of service as a fulfilling goal in their personal, professional, and community lives. Every member represents a different profession, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives that can address challenges comprehensively, spreading service across all layers of society.

Rotarians are encouraged to serve wherever and whenever they can, beyond their club activities. They are motivated to approach their work not only as a means of livelihood but also as an opportunity to serve others.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a 24-word business and ethical principle developed in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor to save a company on the brink of bankruptcy. Officially adopted by Rotary in 1943, the Four-Way Test has since become the foundation of Rotary ethics.
